Themes are still available in iMovie. The following steps will allow you to enable themes in iMovie ’08, ’09, and ’11.

Themes are a great way to add personality and style to your movie. They provide an excellent starting point for beginners, and can provide a good sense of direction for more advanced users. Unfortunately, in iMovie ’11, themes have been stripped from the program. There is a way to get them back though! Some quick step by step instructions are below. Don’t forget to check out some of the example movies on Apple’s site, or in iMovie ’11.

Open up the program you want to change the theme for

  • Select “iMovie” from the menu bar at the top of your computer screen
  • Click on “Preferences” in the drop down menu.
  • Click on the “Theme” tab, and select a theme you like. You can pick any theme available under iMovie ’11/08/09. Note: Some themes like “Breaking News” and “Friends Watching” will only be visible if you have the appropriate video clips in your library.
  • Click on “Done”. You can now preview your movie with your selected theme applied!
  • Scroll down to “Preferences” and click it
  • Click the “Theme” tab

Choose a theme you like.

Note: You can also add custom themes by clicking on “Add Custom Theme.”

Optionally, click on “Preview” to see your movie with the chosen theme applied.

You have now enabled themes in iMovie! Enjoy your new theme! If you want to remove a theme, follow the same steps as above, but choose “None” from the list of available themes. Find “Themes”, then click on the box next to it so that a checkmark appears

You can now choose from various themes, or create one of your own!

Apple has provided a lot of excellent themes in iMovie. Unfortunately, they were removed when Apple updated to iMovie ’11. This is a how-to on enabling themes for older versions of iMovie, including iMovie ’08.

Step 1: Open up the program you want to change the theme for (iMovie)

Step 2: Go to “iMovie” from the menu bar at the top of your computer screen

Step 3: Select “Preferences” in the drop down menu.You should see a window similar to this one here, with a few tabs across the top. Look for a tab called “Theme” and click on it.

Step 4: Click on the “Theme” tab, and select a theme you like. You can pick any theme available under iMovie ’11/08/09. Note: Some themes like “Breaking News” and “Friends Watching” will only be visible if you have the appropriate video clips in your library.

Step 5: Click on “Done”.

Step 6: You can now preview your movie with your selected theme applied! When you’re done, click “Save” and the changes will be saved.
